Acceptable ID for your NOTARY Appointment:

Any one of the following forms of identification (ID) is sufficient, provided that it is current or issued within 5 years: 

  • An ID card or driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles; 
  • A United States passport; 
  • An inmate ID card issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, if the inmate is in custody in California state prison; 
  • Any form of inmate ID issued by a sheriff’s department, if the inmate is in custody in a local detention facility


Any one of the following forms of ID provided that it also contains a photograph, description of the person, signature of the person, and an identifying number: 

  • A valid consular ID document issued by a consulate from the applicant’s country of citizenship, or a valid passport from the applicant’s country of citizenship; 
  • A driver’s license issued by another state or by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue driver’s licenses; 
  • An ID card issued by another state; 
  • A United States military ID card; 
  • An employee ID card issued by an agency or office of the State of California, or an agency or office of a city, county, or city and county in California; 
  • An ID card issued by a federally recognized Tribal government. 

Alternative ID Options for your NOTARY Appointment:

If you do not have valid identification, then you have two options: 


OPTION 1:

Oaths of Two Credible Witnesses – The identity of the signer can be established by the oaths of two credible witnesses whom the notary public does not personally know. Under oath, the credible witnesses must swear or affirm under penalty of perjury. 


OPTION 2:

Oath of a Single Credible Witness – The identity of the signer can be established by the oath of a single credible witness whom the notary public personally knows. The single credible witness must have any one of the following forms of ID as stated above. 


Under oath, the credible witness(s) must swear or affirm that each of the following is true:  The individual appearing before the notary public as the signer of the document is the person named in the document; the credible witness personally knows the signer; the credible witness reasonably believes that the circumstances of the signer are such that it would be very difficult or impossible for the signer to obtain another form of ID; the signer does not possess any of the ID documents authorized by law to establish the signer’s identity; and the credible witness does not have a financial interest and is not named in the document(s) to be signed/notarized. 

Acceptable ID For Ink Fingerprinting:

Primary Option #1- Acceptable ID For Ink Fingerprinting

Please bring an acceptable ID from the list below.


OPTION 1: ACCEPTABLE IDENTIFICATION: 

     Non-expired Approved Primary Identification. 

     Approved ID (Bring 1 of the following):

  • State-issued driver’s license
  • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
  • Federal Government Personal Identity Verification Card (PIV)
  • Uniformed Services Identification Card
  • Department of Defense Common Access Card
  • Foreign Passport with Appropriate Immigration Document(s)
  • USCIS – Permanent Resident Card (I-551)
  • USCIS – Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • Federal, state, or local government agency ID card with photograph
  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card
  • Canadian driver’s license
  • State ID card if the state’s identification card standards are the same as for the driver’s license

Secondary Option #2 - Acceptable ID For Ink Fingerprinting

Secondary Forms of Identification:

In the absence of a primary form of identification, an applicant shall provide at least two of the following forms of secondary identification AND at least two additional forms of supporting documentation that follows: 


OPTION 2: ACCEPTABLE SECONDARY IDENTIFICATION

 

Approved ID (Bring 2 of the following PLUS 2 Supporting Documents):

  • State Government Issued Certificate of Birth
  • U.S. Tribal or Bureau of Indian Affairs Identification Card
  • Native American tribal document
  • Social Security Card
  • Court Order for Name Change/Gender Change/Adoption/ Divorce
  • Marriage Certificate (Government Certificate Issued)
  • U.S. Government Issued Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • Draft record
  • School ID with photograph (minimum age 7 years old, or transaction will be rejected by DOJ) *
  • Certificate of Citizenship (N560)
  • Replacement Certificate of Citizenship (N-561)
  • Certificate of Naturalization (N550)
  • Replacement Certificate of Naturalization (N-570)


PLUS Two Supporting Documentation for Secondary Forms of Identification (In addition to the two above, bring 2 of the following):

  • Utility Bill (Address)
  • Jurisdictional Voter Registration Card
  • Vehicle Registration Card/Title
  • Paycheck Stub with Name/Address*
  • Jurisdictional Public Assistance Card
  • Spouse/Parent Affidavit
  • *Financial information may be redacted (hidden) by the individual.
